Improving Mobility and Accessibility for People with Learning Disabilities in Europe
       
MAPLE Project - Good Practise Guide

This document aims to contribute to improving the accessibility of public transport in Europe, for people who have difficulties with communicating and finding their way around. These people are defined as having “cognitive impairments”.

Detailed reviews of current levels of provision for people with cognitive impairments were carried out in five countries represented by Maple partners in the UK , Greece , France , Sweden and the republic of Ireland. A separate more general review was carried out for the remaining European states.

The documents details for seven provisions to give people with cognitive abilitites the skills for travelling by Public Transport:

  1. Special Transport services - Details the existence of a transport service KARE dedicated to the needs of people with cognitive impairments.
  2. Travel awareness training - Details the existence of a service design to train people with the necessary abilities to travel independently
  3. Travelling Companions - Details a number of schemes around Europe that involve the use of a travel companion to enable public transport journeys by people with special needs
  4. Devices for Travellers – Details the existence of a technical aid that is used for helping people find their way
  5. Staff Training - Explains the use of staff train to assist people with different needs on vehicle interchanges.
  6. Journey Planning - Assesses and informs the way journey planning information should be presented to people with cognitive impairments
  7. Information during a Journey- Looks at the information that will help people with cognitive impairments manoeuvre in and out of a buildings, and provides details of good practice to aid this goal.
