Improving Mobility and Accessibility for People with Learning Disabilities in Europe

MAPLE Project - Greece Sub Study

The Greek public transport study focused on improving accessibility and mobility for people with cognitive disabilities in Greece. This sub-study carried out by Greece was divided into two stages.

  • Stage One- State of Art Review– An investigation into the current situation of public transport accessibility for people with cognitive impairments was carried out in line with the identification of any good practices which existed in Greece.
  • Stage Two – Telephone survey– A national telephone survey of respondents from all transport sectors, including government and local authorities, operators and any interest groups. The aim was to find out what measures are used to make it possible for people with disabilities to travel.

Stage One – State of the Art

Each MAPLE partner city was asked to compile a list of authorities who have transport control from their own country, this was then divided into the 5 categories: Government Authority, Local authority, Special Interest Organisations, Transport Operators and Trainers/Consultants. Greece collated and reviewed its own public transport system, results from Greece with regard to its own country public transport control can be found in the National Report for Greece - Can people with cognititive impairments use public transport effectively.

Stage Two – Telephone Survey

Stage Two of the Sub-Study carried out by MAPLE partners was identical between country's with 30 telephone surveys being conducted by each individual partner. The Greek study was based on 13 telephone interviews, as the system of surface transport was organised in a different way to the rest of Europe. These interviews asked questions regarding the measures taken by organisations to make it possible for persons with disabilities to travel. Any specific measures identified were followed up, these can be reviewed in more depth in the National Report for Greece - Can people with cognititive impairments use public transport effectively.
