MAPLE Project - UK Sub Study

The United Kingdom transport study was undertaken to discover the current situation in relation to how people affected by cognitive impairment travel. This sub study was split into two split into two stages:

  • Stage One- State of Art Review– An investigation into the current status of public transport accessibility for people with cognitive impairments. With aim of identifying good practices within the U.K.
  • Stage Two – Telephone survey - A national survey of respondents from the transport sector, this included individuals from local authorities, operators and interest groups. The aim was to identify what measures are being used to make it possible for people with disabilities to travel.

Stage One – State of the Art Review

For the overall state of art review a list of public authorities were assembled, these were then sub-divided into five categories including: government authority, local authority, special interest organisations, transport operators or trainers/consultants. For the benefit of the UK Maple Sub Study, United Kingdom assessed it own transport situation and polices and identified a number of services that are unique to only the United Kingdom. More information on these services & policies can be found in the National Report for the United Kingdom - Can people with cognititive impairments use public transport effectively.

Stage Two – Services Users Study

The MAPLE Partnership had agreed that 30 individual phone surveys would be carried out by each individual partner. UK identified a list of transport authorities from the Stage One of research who were consulted in Stage Two of this Sub Study. The telephone interviews focused on questions that reviewed how organisations and local authorities help people with disabilities travel. Any specific measures relating to people with disabilities were followed up as part of the Sub Study. Respondents were also asked to highlight any current and future measures that may aid persons with cognitive disabilities to travel by public transport. More information on Stage Two of this work and the types of questions that were asked by UK can be found in the National Report for the United Kingdom - Can people with cognititive impairments use public transport effectively.
